5 Minutes with Anna Weylandt
Weylandts at Design Joburg
Weylandts Spaces, the interior concepts division of the popular local furniture and décor store, will be showcasing their style and expertise within the Rooms on View section of Design Joburg.
We chat to Anna Weylandt, daughter of Chris Weylandt, who is following in her father’s footsteps.
Q: You were exposed to creativity and design from a young age. Briefly explain how you started out in the industry.
A: I was always a creative child. Although I always knew I wanted to pursue a career which involved something to do with design I didn’t always know that I would be involved in the family business. After attending Design Time School of Interior Design I decided to dive straight into the industry and get hands on experience. I worked in commercial and hospitality interior design for two years prior to joining my dad and the Weylandts team as a Furniture Buyer.
Q: What do you love most about the Weylandts brand?
A: That anyone can identify with it. There is something for everyone, people of all tastes can find something that suits their personal style and I believe that the passion for materials and design is reflected in our products and that our customers can feel that.
Q: You’re only 24 yet actively involved in sourcing and meeting new suppliers at Weylandts. Where do you draw your inspiration from when sourcing furniture?
A: I draw inspiration from the elements I see on my travels including iconic design and art. I’m often inspired from the actual materials themselves and do my best to ensure our furniture showcases these elements in the best way possible.
Q: What do you llike most about working alongside your famous dad?
A: Working alongside my father is truly amazing. Not only am I able to pick his brain and absorb his knowledge, but we really enjoy creating things together and both find it so rewarding. We feed off each other’s energy and style and have a very similar taste and appreciation for things so we are mostly on the same page when it comes to decisions.
Q: Explain your personal style and what does your own home look like?
A: Being an Interior Designer, I love so many different looks so I find it rather difficult to explain my personal style. My apartment has a Scandinavian feel with an eclectic mix of trinkets. I must admit, I’m a bit of a collector so I showcase my books, plants, souvenirs and art all over my home. My go-to colours are neutrals, greys in particular. At the moment, I’m obsessed with midnight blues, emeralds and mustard. My favourite piece in my home is very special dining chairs which are original Arne Jacobsen Series 7 chairs previously owned by my grandparents.
