12 April 2017
With the right furniture and accessories outdoor patio living takes on a whole new meaning. Mobelli Furniture + Living understand this, and will be showing exactly how this can be done with an outdoor and new indoor furniture set within the Rooms on View feature at Design Joburg.
We chatted to co-owner Alon Sachs about outdoor trends, materials and more.
What are the current trends in outdoor furniture?
The latest trends push the boundaries in terms of bringing the style and comfort of indoor furniture to the outdoor space. Technological advancements in fabrics make it possible to have fully upholstered seating in soft tactile fabrics that are luxurious to the touch. The Bravo, Novello and Lille outdoor lounge ranges typify this trend with a choice of outdoor fabric, microfibre and sling fabrics. All are fully weather resistant and can be left outside in the sun and rain, yet offer the look and feel of their indoor equivalents. The ability to truly blend the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces is now a reality.
Furniture needs to offer functionality and dual purpose, how has Mobelli embraced this trend outdoors?
The way we use and interact with outdoor spaces means furniture must offer flexibility, it’s the top of everyone’s criteria list. The most obvious example is with extendable dining tables. Being able to accommodate extra guests at a moment’s notice is very important, with our Grandé or Mediterranean as prime examples. Both these tables can comfortably seat six to eight people, yet when extended can seat four extra guests. These fuss-free tables extend effortlessly in seconds.
Why do you think people are focusing more on their outdoor spaces?
The indoor space has traditionally been the ‘family area’ with the outdoor space being restricted to a ‘patio’ area for a braai or time by the pool. As trends in outdoor furniture design and materials have advanced, the outdoor space can now be transformed into a true ‘living’ area. Outdoor seating and dining can be left exposed to the elements all-year round.
Are there any developments in materials (fabric, timber, metal etc.) that have impacted on your industry?
Outdoor furniture has often been constructed of wood or wicker. However more contemporary materials now make more innovative designs possible. The latest outdoor furniture is more likely made from more technical fabric or aluminium, both of which require very little maintenance and look great for years. A perfect example is Mobelli’s Xanadu collection, made from flat weave woven outdoor fabric on a scratch-resistant aluminium frame. The unique, eye-catching appeal is at the forefront of outdoor furniture design. The fully upholstered cushions with outdoor fabric offer comfort and practicality.
Outdoor dining tables made of durable scratch resistant aluminium bring a contemporary modern look to our outdoor dining spaces. Creating an urban edgy look for your outdoor space is now achievable with a range of designs which are often combined with sleek tempered glass.
In terms of a lounge suite to complete the look new microfibre fabrics are designed specifically for outdoors. The Novello set from Mobelli is upholstered in soft white microfibre. This lounge set can be left outside in full rain, water simply runs off and can be sat on 30 minutes later. It's modernity and functionality in perfect unison.
