The Hendrick’s Gin Bar remained the place to converge at Design Joburg. Each year, the bar is designed in collaboration with a top-drawer local design studio who brings together merges their own unique ethos and aesthetic with that of Hendrick’s. May 2022, it was Dark Horse’s turn. Their philosophy of bringing people closer together with their designs is a sentiment that made them an obvious choice for this gin bar.
For 10 years now, this luminous product design duo has brought us contemporary furniture, lighting and homeware that solves daily problems with beautifully designed and sustainable solutions. Their clean-lined, full grain leather armchairs, for example, have long been on our want list.
Drawing on the nostalgia and whimsy of the Hendrick’s brand, Dark Horse planned to create a contemporary bar space that nods to the emphasis Hendrick’s places on balance and expert craftmanship in their gin creation. Picture a thoughtfully-designed transitional space that explores the idea of travel and its ability to unearth hidden gems.
There was a Cemcrete feature wall as the backdrop and a host of gorgeous new Dark Horse product launches like their Ravazza Bar chairs which blend strong lines, hand shaped timber and refined leather detailing. Add to that lush live greenery spilling over from a series of high-end, contemporary planters by Wildcat Indoor Plant Features and a selection of hardworking fabrics from Sunbrella.
We expected nothing less than a stylish and happening space in which to meet, greet and take a break over a glass of Hendrick's world class gin, and we weren't dissapointed.
